I paint glimpses of the liminal world, which exists between perception, experience, changing reality, the conscious and the unconscious. Distant memories, recent experiences, identity, and self-awareness shift as they are shaped by the passing of time and via spiritual practices such as meditation. During my process I add many translucent layers concealing and revealing, veiling and unveiling color and space as different areas in the foreground, background, and the grid itself come in and out of focus. Just as our senses, body, mind and soul perceive phenomena, solid yet ever changing, I find that in using the grid, it can provide a structure, while continuously dissolving and morphing, revealing shadow and light. It reminds me of looking through the pinholes created by the loose weave of a hat resting on my face, light filtering through, shifting and changing as I adjust my position.
Sylvia Montesinos was born in Costa Rica and after living in Florida for many years, made New Mexico her home in 2011. Because her grandfather and uncles are accomplished Ecuadorian artists, she grew up in an environment that encouraged her to explore her creativity from a young age. She minored in graphic arts in 1990 and went on to earn an MD specializing in psychiatry in 2002 and worked in mental for eight additional years. Since moving to New Mexico, Sylvia decided to return to her first love, art, and she has been developing her art practice ever since.
